Meeting in Friday Harbor, WA, a typical San Juan Island sea kayak trip is 3 or 4 days and averages 12 people (2 people per sea kayak) and 1 guide per every 9 guests. We also offer customized 5-day trips for private groups of 6 people or more. On this ocean sea kayaking trip, safety is always our main focus and we have a guide paddling at the front and back of the group if the trip exceeds 9 guests. Otherwise, for a 9-person trip, there will be one guide. Personal and group gear will be stored in the boats, so packing lightly is appreciated. At our campsite, there’s an opportunity to explore the islands, usually on groomed trails. Your guide will be knowledgeable about marine life and the environment so your questions are welcomed. The guides also double as outstanding cooks. At the conclusion of your trip you will be dropped off at the ferry terminal in downtown Friday Harbor.
Each island that we visit will have an enclosed pit toilet system much like you would find in a state park. Please bring biodegradable soap and a towel for bathing in the ocean. The ocean water is crystal clear, cool and refreshing and does not contain high amounts of salt, so itching is not a problem. You may choose to bring a solar shower bag. Running water is also found in the areas where we camp.
Breakfasts are served with fresh fruit and include home-style hash browns and eggs, French toast, blueberry or apple pancakes, as well as hot and cold cereals. Breakfasts are always washed down with good cups of steaming hot coffee and quality teas.
Lunches include deli-type turkey sandwiches, Mexican bean salad, tabouli, hummus and bagels with cream cheese replete with our special spread. Lunches always include fresh vegetables and fruit as well as cookies or some other Northwest treat. Plenty of energy food such as gorp, peanuts, raisins, and M&M’s will also be on hand. You won’t go hungry!
For dinner, you can look forward to expert Dutch oven cooking that consists of smoked salmon pesto linguini with sun dried tomatoes and Kalamata olives, a spicy Thai stir fry with our specially made peanut sauce, freshly made spinach lasagna and a layered chile relleno casserole. Desserts include pear/apple crisp, gingerbread topped with freshly made whipped cream and seasonal fruits such as nectarines or fresh pineapple dipped in a rich, bubbly chocolate fondue.
No previous sea kayaking experience is necessary. Basic paddle strokes and safety procedures will be taught the first morning at the put-in and thereafter as needed.
