Geography Professor, Dr. James Dunn, University of Northern Colorado, will be facilitating this trip as you learn about the power of water, wind, and weathering in a western environment. Labs and field exercises will be conducted throughout the trip as appropriate. This trip is for UNC college students, alumni, and adult public.

Colorado canoeing on the Gunnison River will spark your sense of adventure with opportunities for hiking and exploring, floating in your lifejacket and camping along the river’s edge. During this Colorado canoe trip, you will be dwarfed by high walls of red sandstone and shale deposited during the age of the dinosaurs. This is an exclusive trip for Happy Hikers.

While canoeing, camping, and hiking along the scenic waters of the Gunnison River, learn, explore and create. We’ll investigate the natural environment of the river and desert and learn how human, plant, and animal life in these special areas have adapted to this unique environment. We may spot some rare plants, create arts & crafts with plants or sample some edible plants. Partnered with Denver Botanic Gardens this trip is open to the public.

Our three-quarter sea kayak circumnavigation of San Juan Island affords participants a chance to kayak among the many small, uninhabited islands that “ring†San Juan Island. Join Denver Museum facilitator, Bob Raynolds, on this scenic 60-mile river section. Canoe through 7-miles of the beautiful Gunnison Gorge, just east of Delta, CO, and on through the Escalante Wildlife Refuge and into the majestic sandstone canyons of the Colorado Plateau which includes the famous Dominguez Canyon Wilderness Area with petroglyphs, wildlife, waterfalls and hiking. On the way visit a 13,000 year old archaeological site. Open to the public.

Canoe through a landscape created over 260 million years ago when dinosaurs, not “cowboys,†roamed the Wild West. Earth Science teacher, Ed Adams, will be available to answer your questions and point out interesting geologic mysteries. Ed’s knowledge is value-added to this beautiful canyon canoe trip.
