Geography Professor, Dr. James Dunn, University of Northern Colorado, will be facilitating this trip as you learn about the power of water, wind, and weathering in a western environment. Labs and field exercises will be conducted throughout the trip as appropriate. This trip is for UNC college students, alumni, and adult public.

Centennial Canoe is proud to team up with History Colorado on an exciting Gunnison River canoe trip to a wild and remote area with fascinating history. Our facilitator, Ft. Lewis College professor of history and Environmental Studies, Dr. Andrew Gulliford, will share his stories of the colorful characters and circumstances that helped shape the western landscape as you journey along the river.

Paddle along one of the West’s longest stretches of tranquil wilderness water, just north of Canyonlands National Park in eastern Utah. Jennifer Moss Logan, Denver Museum educator, will be your guide as you marvel at colorful sandstone walls hundreds of feet high and explore canyons and ancient rock art.

Colorado canoeing on the Gunnison River will spark your sense of adventure with opportunities for hiking and exploring in one of Colorado's newest Wilderness Areas, Dominguez Canyon, floating in your life jacket and camping along the river’s edge. During this Colorado canoe trip, you will be dwarfed by high walls of red sandstone and shale deposited during the age of the dinosaurs.

This river section features majestic walls of red sandstone and offers some of the best canoeing in Colorado. You’ll be amazed at stands of shiny granite sculpted by water through the ages while paddling or floating in your life jacket past the remnants of ancient metamorphic rock, called Black Rock.

With over 200 rocky, forested islands to explore, the San Juan Archipelago is a superb kayak destination. You’ll experience the fun of paddling and camping on remote islands accessible only by boat! These pristine waters are host to over 80 resident orca whales plus minke whales, harbor and Dall's porpoises, harbor seals, river otters and a variety of bird life. With sublime views of Mt. Baker and the Olympic Mountains this trip is a Northwest classic!
