Join us for the 8th Annual Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (VOC) canoe trip down the gorgeous Gunnison River. This is a working trip with the Bureau of Land Management to manage tamarisk growth. Please call the VOC office to sign up for this trip at 303-715-1010.

This four-day canoe trip will enlist volunteers helping the Bureau of Land Management with a high priority project, conducting tamarisk control along the Gunnison River in the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area (NCA). We will travel a 31-mile stretch of the Gunnison River through an 800-feet-deep canyon near the eastern edge of the NCA. This gentle stretch of river flows northwest through the desert landscape of scenic red-rock canyons and bluffs, home to desert bighorn sheep, elk, mountain lion, black bear, mule deer, golden eagle, turkey, great blue heron, Canada geese, and the collared lizard. Cultural and historical sites from the past 10,000 years as well as geological and paleontological resources covering 600 million years are located throughout the NCA.

The work project involves removing tamarisk and other weeds so the BLM can better manage weeds and improve riparian habitat and an important part of the process for establishing campsites along the river.

During each of the four days there will be opportunities for leisure activities, including exploring canyons, hiking to see ancient rock art and a beautiful waterfall in Dominguez Canyon, or just kicking back and enjoying the beauty of Colorado’s newest National Conservation Areas.
