Canoeing in Colorado on the Yampa River, the last undammed tributary of the Colorado River system. This enchanted river in northwestern Colorado gently meanders through a remote area teeming with wildlife, colorful vegetation and an Indian pictograph. Relaxation is the keyword while camping along the lush open meadows and high-walled canyons through this 34-mile river stretch near Craig, CO. Plus, you have a good chance of seeing wildlife: deer, antelope, hawks and both bald and golden eagles. This is the most gentle of the rivers we paddle…canoeing in Colorado has never been better!

Centennial Canoe teams up with the Colorado School of Mines (303-273-3303) to offer an ecology & art class for teachers (K-12) and for general interest to the public. This 3-day canoe trip earns 1.5 recertification credits for teachers. The general public may go on the canoe trip at regular canoe trip prices.

While canoeing, camping, and hiking, we’ll investigate the natural environment of the Yampa River, its riparian ecosystem, and the surrounding desert and learn how human, plant, and animal life in these special areas have adapted to this unique environment. And, like the native peoples, we’ll be inspired by our natural surroundings to create art and poetry, and learn how to gather and prepare plants for food and utilitarian uses.

Discussions, exercises, and activities for the classroom and general public interest will be conducted throughout the canoe trip as appropriate by your facilitator, Karen Caddis; Karen is a Project Manager & field biologist for an environmental consulting firm. She has 25 years of experience and specializes in sensitive species and wetland evaluations. What better opportunity to have fun on the river and learn while you’re at it!
