Canoeing in Colorado on the Gunnison River will spark your sense of adventure with opportunities for hiking and exploring, floating in your lifejacket and camping along the river’s edge. With guide Bob Raynolds, Denver Museum Earth Sciences Research Associate, marvel at colorful sandstone walls hundreds of feet high and explore canyons and ancient rock art and archaeological sites. These canyons in the Colorado Plateau are truly magnificent and not soon forgotten. Massive cottonwoods stand on many river bends supporting the huge nests of blue herons, hawks and eagles. On this five-day journey, we'll paddle 60-miles of the Gunnison River starting near Hotchkiss, CO. This stretch includes 7-miles of the beautiful Gunnison Gorge, just east of Delta, CO. We'll also paddle through the Escalante Wildlife Refuge and into the majestic Dominguez Canyon with petroglyphs, wildlife, waterfalls and hiking. Depending on campsite availability, you may have a layover day (staying camped 2 nights in the same place) in Dominguez Canyon, one of Colorado’s newest designated Wilderness Areas, and one of the most beautiful stops on the river. On your journey visit a 13,000 year old archaeological site, Eagle Rock, which predates the Egyptian pyramids by 8,400 years.
